Grace on Every Page

Some of my best memories as a dad are the times I spent reading to my boys when they were little. We’d snuggle up, flip through the pages, and get lost in stories, especially the ones with something fun to find on each page. Hidden animals, characters, or clues—it made reading an adventure.

So when I sat down to create A Broken Crayon, I knew I wanted to include something just like that.

Finding Grace

Meet Grace—a tiny, hidden character in the book who shows up on every page. She’s there in the background, quietly reminding readers that even when we feel broken, God’s grace is present. Sometimes we don’t see it right away. Sometimes we don’t feel it. But grace is there, working behind the scenes in ways we don’t expect.

It’s a simple idea, but deeply biblical.

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life…” —Psalm 23:6 (ESV)

Sparking the Conversation

In the story, the little crayon falls and breaks. He believes his purpose is lost. But it’s only when he’s picked up by the Artist that he begins to see things differently. Isn’t that how God works in our lives, too?

My hope is that children reading this book (or having it read to them) will start to see grace that way—as something to look for, even in the hardest moments.

And for parents, teachers, and counselors, Grace opens the door to bigger conversations. What does grace mean? Where do we see it? Why does it matter? That’s why we included discussion questions at the end of the book. This story isn’t just fun to read; it’s designed to help spark real, meaningful talks.
